Four years ago, I painted this:
Two years later, as an exercise during 3D printing club, I modeled that snowman:
Now, as I was gathering materials for this portfolio, I found this old render and decided to tweak the lighting and background a bit. What was supposed to be a quick, one-hour fix turned into a full revamp.
The snowy ground texture was replaced with a procedurally generated one to look more realistic for such a large surface. The roughness and bump were also plugged into the random generator. The trees are remodeled (using a tree generation plugin), and are spawned by a particle system overlaid with a cell texture, to give a clumped, patchy look. A particle system was also used for the falling snow, which was textured as an emission, so that it would look bright regardless of other light sources. Finally, I added mist to create depth in the background.
The pink color scheme evolved on its own. I decided that pink trees would look nice with the sky color and lighting. Later on, after a break, I tweaked the sky color to coordinate better with the trees, then changed the tree colors again.
