Creating Reality Hackathon Banner

I'm part of the social media outreach team for Creating Reality, an upcoming VR and AR hackathon. I designed this banner as a cover image for the Facebook page, Twitter account, and others.

The wireframe of a blank landscape on the left represents the process of creation, and on the right is a semi-realistic rendering of a Californian desert (the hackathon is held in Los Angeles). Since this hackathon is aimed towards the entertainment and gaming fields, I chose to emulate the style of low-poly video game assets with a bright, saturated color scheme.

At first, I came up with this design:

However, people said that they could barely read the title. Too much focus was put on the background image (because I was a little biased), and there was no call to action. As a result, I decided to put the title directly in the 3D scene, and make the wireframe blue to increase contrast. Since the banner always accompanies a page with more information, the location and date was replaced with a prominent link to the application page. I also remodeled the palm trees to look more like the typical ones in California.
